#TwitterWorthy

I haven’t been a Twitter user for a very long time. I only started using Twitter when I got my very first iPhone 4s (I felt that with an iPhone, came great responsibilities haha). Despite the short time that I have been on Twitter, I’ve noticed one very common thing... People don’t “tweet” for their own sake... they tweet for others.

I personally use twitter for my own amusement. I use it as a place to do short little vents,  or to talk about things that I KNOW for a fact, that no one will care about. I find it reassuring to be able to say what I want, when I want without having to be under the public (ie. my friends) scrutiny, as I would be on Facebook. I don’t advertise my Twitter account on Facebook, nor do I ever mention that I have one... Ever. It’s okay for strangers to find me and follow me, but I don’t want people I personally know to follow me. For me Twitter is a private thing.

Now, back to what I was saying earlier. The friends that I have who have their Twitter accounts linked with their Facebook, they post things that are clearly specified to be what I call a “#TwitterWorthy” post. As in they would post things that relate to the current trending hashtags (#). It's almost like they are trying to gain some sort of recognition. It's like high school, they're trying to be in the popular crowd. It isn’t just me who has noticed this, a really good friend of mine pointed this out. After that I noticed it EVERYWHERE.

I’m not saying that I am perfect... As of lately, I too have been finding myself trying to make Twitter worthy posts. It isn’t like i set out trying to do this, but sometimes when a super awesome amazing thing happens to me, I think to myself, ‘oh hey! This is totally going to go on Twitter!! Then I slowly start to formulate a hashtag for it. Now hashtags have to conclude what you just said, but in a condensed (two maybe three word) and witty way. It could range from, "So I just saw my dog do the funniest thing in the back yard!! #DogPoop" to "Most beautiful ceremony I've ever watched! #RoyalWedding"

I hate it. I absolutely hate it. I want Twitter to be a thing for myself, but the affect that Twitter has on people is crazy, I think it is an inevitable thing. We are going to get swept up the whirlwind of what is popular. No matter how much we say that we won’t succumb to the temptations of pop culture, we will.

Ask yourself this, have you ever unintentionally planned something around a Tweet, a Facebook status update or an Instagram tag?

  1. I hated twitter up until about a month ago. Like you mentioned the random, useless tweets and hashtags annoyed the crap out of me too.

Recently though, twitter has grown on me. I personally don't tweet but I started following comedians and musicians and so twitter has become somewhere I go for a good laugh or to get an update on albums/tours of my fave artists.

If you want a good laugh, you should follow @briansbadluck - i read all 800 of his tweets in one sitting because they are
    hiarious!

  2. Haha I'll check him out for sure.

Tweeting is kind of like the shortest form of a diary. That's why I use it. I want to vent, but I don't want my friends to see my complaints haha. P.s I have no followers except a really really good friend and a random girl... Pretty much total privacy

  3. I just recently started using twitter about a couple of months ago, and I can say so much better than facebook for sure. it isnt the greatest social network out there but definitely better than facebook for sure. I still have my facebook account and i check it occasionally from time to time, but what irritates me the most when i'm on facebook is when someon has linked there twitter to face and i see status and pictures that were first put onto twitter. These statuses the include the hash tags shouldnt even be on twitter. I went to twitter to get away from facebook and now i see people linking them? Like what is going on..

I get were you're saying about the completely nonsense tweets that people have. I have a couple of friends on twitter who constantly tweet about everything that has happened to them, from eating a burger to just finished cleaning the room. I mean come on does everyone really need to know that you just did that? Some people are crazy and should just not even have a Twitter or facebook and get off any social networking sites and stick to texting or calling your friends.
