I personally love celebrity gossip blogs, and my favourite guilty pleasure is Perez Hilton, a flamboyant LA blogger. He dishes on any celebrity, and never holds back. He posts gossip about celebrities from Prince William to Lil' Kim, and always has a plucky remark to support each juicy story. Other big name celebrity gossip blogs include imnotobsessed, Dlisted, and The Superficial, all of which are equally noteworthy if you're looking to find some fresh dirty gossip on any celebrity.
Now, I have admitted to being a regular viewer of Perez Hilton, and I will even go so far to say I LIKE celebrity gossip, but what about when it's gossip about people you actually know?
There is a new gossip blog called The Dirty, created by Nik Richie, that allows anyone to post about anyone. Calgary even has its own page.
This is where I feel the gossip blog phenomenon goes off the rails. If you have ever looked at this website you will know that it is degrading, disrespectful, and just downright mean. Almost every post is about sexually promiscuous girls, while the rest is about drug use or deadbeat parents. These are things that should not be posted on the Internet, especially when they are meant to cause people harm. I am sure that the majority of people being posted about on this website are dealing with much deeper problems. Why is it fair for anyone to cause them more pain?
What do you think about this form of gossip blog? Has it gone to far?

That was the stupidest thing I have read in a long time. I think that this has gone way to far. I even thought Prez Hilton went to far, but this is just insane.People are so busy trashing one another while the world has real problems. Who seriously cares who slept with who and who. I think people could find many more productive things to do with their time. I guess the internet will always attract people who just want to call each other names and not have to deal with any of the repercussions. Remember it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel.
ReplyDeleteA gossip blog for Calgary??? Is it sad that I instantly thought of Gossip Girl...
ReplyDeleteI love Perez and all of the other celebrity gossip blogs
and so it sounds crazy to think about a Calgarian blog. But really a blog exposing the lives of people in Calgary, is doing the exact same thing Perez is doing, it just happens to be about celebrities instead. So to judge or call out "the Dirty" but not Perez and other blogs is pretty hypocritical
The main difference between The Dirty and Perez is that Perez hilton is not malicious (he used to be until he changed is approach sometime last year). The Dirty is all about being mean, where as Perez just gives updates on topics like who's dating who, and where people are spotted and who they are with. I'd really suggest you take a look at The Dirty before calling me out as a hypocrite. And believe me, it's nothing like Gossip Girl!
ReplyDeleteSorry Lauren, I think my original comment was worded wrong - I didn't intend to specifically call you a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteI just meant in general that if someone (myself included) is ok with content in Perez' blog (while less hateful than the dirty, it is still an invasion or an exposure to someone’s personal life) than they should realize the Dirty is basically the same thing (yes I agree more vulgar but still it is based around a persons personal life)
