North American culture is obsessed with the
lifestyles of the "Rich and Famous", so obsessed that there are websites, talk
shows, and even full hour TV shows dedicated to these handful of people. One of the most common websites that can be
found for up to minute news on celebrities is TMZ.
TMZ debuted in November of 2005. Its
letters stand for thirty-mile zone which implies the zone of West Beverly Boulevard and North La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles. TMZ uses the paparazzi for most of its
footage as well as its pictures of celebrities on its site. TMZ also has a TV
show that actually takes place in the TMZ office. The show has the employees of
TMZ “investigating” things going on in the entertainment world. TMZ is known
for breaking the story of Mel Gibson’s arrest for a DUI. Also they were the
first website to know about Britney Spears’ divorce to Kevin Federline as well
as they had reported on Michael Jackson’s death before any other news station.
On the website for TMZ anyone take part in helping them with news. “Got a Tip?”
is on every page and anyone can type in their type for TMZ reporters or they
can call the TMZ hotline. The site as well as the TV show is catered to young
minds. The show is really simple to follow and does not stay on a topic very
long. The website is easy to navigate and all of the entries are short and to
the point.
Another huge part
of the entertainment news scene is Perez Hilton. This website is actually a
person whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. Perez Hilton is a
blogger and his website divers from the website of TMZ. Since his website is a
blog it is his opinion so even though there is up to date celebrity news on his
website and there is some actual reporting taking place it is written with
bias. Perez does have an easy site to navigate. There is even an option on the
toolbar that is called “Star seeker”.
This allows to you to find almost every celebrity that is famous of some
sort and find articles on the Perez Hilton website written about them. Fun
right!?! Oh to feel like we are a part of the world of celebrities.
Even while
waiting in line at the grocery store people can take full advantage of reading
into the lives of people they wish to be and who they have never met. People Magazine one of the more reputable magazines always has a cover story in which
they interview a celebrity or someone who is famous at that time and get all
the information they can. This week in People the cover story is about Matthew
McConaughey’s wedding to Camilla Alves and what the story is behind her wedding
dress. One of my favourite issues of People are usually the "Sexiest Man Alive" issues or the "Hottest Bachelors". Yummy!
The cover on MacLean’s Magazine is “The Majority of us
are singles. So why do we still live in a couples world?” but that’s real news
so it’s not as exciting.
I love People
Magazine don’t get me wrong. I probably knew more about Jennifer Anniston and
Brad Pitts divorce then I knew about the bombing in London by Islamic
Terrorists that killed over 50 people. That is what society has become though.
People care more about who is dating who, rather than what is going on in the
world. It is interesting our fascination with the lives of people who are
famous. We are a society who cares more about what Angelina Jolie is wearing to
the Oscars rather than the problems of child hunger across the world.
