Calgary's Best 2012

If you’re stuck in Calgary this summer and not sure what to do, Fast Forward weekly published their Best of Calgary 2012 today and could provide you with a bunch of new places to check out.

Along with Calgary’s top places to check out, they’ve also posted things like the best neighborhood, scariest sidewalk, and best uses for tax dollars.

I was not surprised to find that the new Peace Bridge was voted the worst use of tax dollars along with the new roads and public transit. I find the new bridge to be a useless eye sore.

As for what to do while you’re stuck in Calgary, how about checking out a free event? The Sun and Salsa Festival was voted second best free event following the Lilac Festival

You can head down to Kensington on July 22 and test out a bunch of different salsas from different vendors. While you’re snacking away, you can listen to live Latin music that will be playing throughout the streets.

If you’re a bookworm, how about checking out a new bookstore? Fair’s FairPages on Kensington, and Shelf Life Books were voted the best bookstores in Calgary. You could spend a whole afternoon just browsing through the books and you can check out their websites for any upcoming events in their store.

If you decide it’s too sunny to be stuck inside a bookstore all day, you can never go wrong with grabbing some ice cream. Fiasco GelatoAmato Gelato Café, and My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe were voted the best ice cream shops. While Fiasco and Amato seem more like a more fancy choice, My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe is a more classic style of ice cream with a bunch of different flavors to choose from.

If you’re more of a night owl, how about checking out the best voted night life? While most people are probably familiar with the clubs voted best place to dance like CommonwealthHifi, and Twisted, some places that might be new to you are those voted the “Coolest hole-in-the-wall” like Milk Tiger Lounge,  Hop in Brew Pub, and Broken City

There’s still a whole range of Calgary’s best posted on this list, so I definitely suggest you check it out. Do you agree with everything that they voted on the list as Calgary’s best? I’d be interested to hear some people’s input.

  1. I'm so sad about this. But on Kensington, there use to be a DELICIOUS frozen yogurt place. I discovered it on an adventure with my friends when I was a student at ACAD.

I fell in love with that Spoon Me (the place), and I've never had frozen yogurt quite that. There is an option for either plain, acai berry or I think chocolate. I personally LOVED the plain one, it tasked delicious, it was sweet and tangy and definitely tart... in the most delicious way of course, and you can put your own toppings on it, its great. It was also a mixture of creamy and gelato-y

In April, I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I would go grab some with my friend. I was exploding with excitement, and drove my friend crazy with how great it was. He even got a bit excited to try it... We got there and it was GONE!!! I don't know what happened, I think they relocated, and I am still devastated by that...

Just thought I would share about that once wonderful place, that's all... And if you can recommend me a place that would be swell!!
