The Dexter Copy Cat?

*** Please be advised that some of the content in this blog may be graphic and disturbing***

FICTION: Dexter (an adaptation of the novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter) is probably one of my all-time favorite shows. There is something very fascinating and charming about the character (I cannot emphasize this word enough) Dexter Morgan – a serial killer who kills serial killers.
In season one; we meet up with the Ice Truck Killer. The Ice Truck Killer essentially cuts his victims up into pieces and strategically places them so that Dexter will find them. Body parts are even sent to the Miami Police office where Dexter works. It becomes a puzzle for Dexter as he realizes that the Ice Truck Killer knows who Dexter really is…
NON-FICTION: Luka Magnotta, a Canadian Serial killer charged with murdering and dismembering Lin Jun. An international manhunt was in place to arrest Magnotta, and it ended with his capture in Berlin on June 4, 2012.
For anyone unfamiliar with the case, here is a brief history:
  • 2007 - Luka Magnotta claims to be in a relationship with high profile Canadian-Murder Karla Homolka
  • 2010 – Magnotta releases a series of Internet videos where he deliberately harms and kills animals
  • 2010-2012 – Magnotta has invented multiple online persona's that depict himself as a cannibal and necrophiliac
  • May 29, 2012 – a package containing a human foot is delivered to the Conservative Party of Canada
  • May 30, 2012 – the foot and multiple other body parts are discovered and identified as belonging to Lin Jun
  • May 31, 2012 – the international search for Magnotta begins

For me, this story sounded like something directly out of a Dexter plot. Yet it was reality. This story isn’t meant to provide the audience with entertainment, intrigue and suspense as we wait to see what will happen next. This is a real person (not a TV character) who is seriously disturbed.
It is not my intent to bring humor to the case when referring to Magnotta as a Dexter Copy Cat, but rather display the frightening similarities and contrast the reality and the fantasy between the real life serial killer and the fabricated one on TV. This should not be a real story, it shouldn’t be headlining news, but rather an episode on a TV show. The lines between reality and fantasy should not be so blurred…
