Dirty "Dubstep" Dancing

It's been rather apparent that Dubstep has had an affect on pop culture over the past two years. From Skrillex to Deadmou5, dubstep and electro have been added to pop artists music. Lately, it seems that every song on the radio has either a dubstep breakdown halfway through it or a dubstep style theme to the song. This change in music trend has made me wonder how it will and has affected other art forms that are reliant on music such as dancing.  From what I have seen of the dancing, I must say its pretty crazy and if you want to see a sweet example check this out.

This year on So You Think You Can Dance it seemed like every second dancer had infused there dance moves with a dubstep inspired section of music. With dubstep added to the music there were dance moves that came with it which came across as break dancing mixed with the robot. This addition of break and robot dance moves to the other genres of dancing has inspired some very interesting collaborations of dance and music. Just like dubstep remixes of songs it appears that dancing is experiencing some of the same changes.

Personally, I like dubstep because it is close to punk with breakdowns and heavier tones but it is just crazy when you watch dancers add it to their dance moves. If you watch the video you can see that it takes a lot of skill to add this style of dance moves with the music. The craziest part is that most of these dancers would likely not have added this style of dance to there routines if it wasn't for the current trend of dubstep.

This change makes me wonder what will happen next with both dance and music. What will become the next style in pop culture and how will it effect both art forms?  What do you guys think? Leave a comment and if you find any dubstep videos post a link.

We LOVE Fictional Characters

Fictional Characters have become sort of an obsession within North American society. Movies, TV shows, even the news circles around them. Sometimes people even believe that they may be real and that it could happen! Here are the most common fictional characters in today's society

1. Vampires
They are everywhere with their superhuman speed and strength and are always cold. Some Vampires can actual come out during the day and face the sun without burning into ash. They live FOREVER which is super cool but also an extreme curse. The kickers, they are dead and they have to suck the blood from living things. Good thing it no longer has to be humans, there are blood banks as well as little animals running around that they can kill instead. Makes me feel better about walking around at night. Vampires have always been around in society they have blown up in the last couple years and found their way to almost every TV show and movie that is released. There are even Vampire Conventions. There is a list by Rotten Tomatoes that rates the Best Vampire Movies of all time.
The following are just some TV and movies that include Vampires:
True Blood
Buffy the Vampire Diaries
Underworld

Twilight
2. Werewolves
Now where would the Vampires be without there nemesis the Werewolf. Usually in every Vampire movie there is also Werewolves. These creatures are extremely warmblooded and usually are quite large. They do not live forever but they at least only have to werewolves on a full moon. Their bite to a Vampire in most movies is lethal and will kill the Vampire. They usually travel in packs and they are werewolves either through blood or because they got bitten by one. Each movie or show is different. List of the Best Horror Werewolf Movies . Personally I like nice werewolves. ie. Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.

Ginger Snaps 2
Lycan (Werewolf) in Underworld
New Teen Wolf
Original Teen Wolf

Zombies have always been around because what is cooler then dead people walking. These characters are always bad and are really just trying to eat human people. They are slow walking and are rotting and I am going to assume they smell extremely bad. I am not every sure how zombies actually come alive. Sometimes its because of a miracle drug that is going to save the world but instead it turns people into zombies. Or there is some sort of curse that brings them dead back to life. Either way these slow moving dead people are extremely scary and if they catch you, more often then not your going to become a walking dead person as well. Zombies have even graced the news lately and one person was described as a zombie. Some people actually believe that there is going to a zombie apocalypse. If that happens I think I have watched enough shows to know exactly what to do. Live on a boat because I am pretty sure Zombies can't swim. These are some of the Top 10 Zombie Movies.  These are my favourite zombie movies and TV shows.

These fictional characters allow us to escape our own world and believe in something completely different. All I can say is I think I would want to be a Vampire who did not live forever if there was a zombie apocalypse I just hope that the animals did not become zombies as well or I would for sure die of starvation.

Dads Day Golf-a-thon

Dad's Day was this past Sunday and I did what my Dad wants to do every year...watch golf!  Every year I spend most of the day with him and watch the U.S. Open Championship of Golf. Now, golf isn't my favorite sport to watch but I do see the beauty in it.  I can't believe how many people watch it!  Although I don't necessarily enjoy watching the golf, even though after a hour or two I do find myself enjoying it, there are several things I do like; the fans, seeing the crazy shots and the commercials.

Most of all, I like watching golf with my Dad for the commercials. Just like people who watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, I like watching the U.S. Open for them.  Unlike Super Bowl commercials, golf commercials definitely come across with a certain target market in mind. This blatant target market makes me laugh for many reasons. From cars that play golf to ED commercials they are definitely targeted at an older audience and because of that have some very funny commercials.

This year the commercial I liked the best was with a car that had a golf ball on the dashboard. The driver swerves all over the road trying to get the ball in the cup holder. Now, I think the point of the commercial was that the car has very good handling but it comes across as "the car you can swerve into on-coming traffic in".

Even though golf tends to be rather dull, for me, the commercials are not the only thing that makes watching worth while. The other reason I enjoy watching golf are for the crazy shots. Some of the shots are just insane and some just do not make sense. This year, one of the golfers drove the ball into a tree and it vanished forever. Now you would think with about a hundred fans and ten video cameras on the ball it would be pretty hard to lose it, but it happened and it was pretty crazy.

Overall I had a good time and I'm sure well do it again next year.

Burgers mmm

Mmm burgers -

So, I was too tired to cook this Saturday night and I had an ear infection, which made coming home from 8 hours of work to make dinner and the resulting mess not so appealing.
Why not take out? The thing is, when I'm not 100 percent, I'm pretty picky in choosing what I eat. If it's not right, it makes me feel worse- so I had to find the right place. I wanted something homemade- ruling out Wendys, McDonalds and everything else. So I drove around and found this place called Joes or Pops - something like that- and I got what I think was the best burger ever. It was good and had everything on it and it was made fresh when I ordered. It's located on 17th Avenue and 27th Street right by the 7/11. What can I say?  It was good  and it made slaving away all day and dealing with a constant crackle in my ear fade away. It's funny how good food can do that. Thoughts ? Does good comfort food  make life just that much better ?

old people

Hanging out with old people-

Now, I spend some of my hang out time with old people. My Nana in Calgary lives down the street and she’s pretty old at 92. My other nanny lives in New Brunswick and she's even older at 98. When I spend time with them, all I can think about is how the world has changed for the better and the worse too. For instance, I was talking about how hard it was to memorize this poem for one of my classes, and my Calgary nana, in between bites of her  dinner, recited it perfectly by memory.  It shows how different both education and expectations have changed over the last 75ish years. But then they had to grow up without TV, ipods, dvds and cell phones. What are your thoughts on old people and how they look at life?

Trying to write blogs with an ear infection

Trying to write blogs with an ear infection-

Now, I don’t ever remember having an ear infection as a  kid but I have one now. It wasn't hurting, it was more the annoying crackle and the annoying feeling when I yawned that bothered me so much that I went to the walk in clinic to get it checked out. It's really never a good sign when a doctor says: “Oh, wow, that’s bad.” I didn't really think it could be that bad- there is usually searing pain and then you know there is an infection. It  became apparent that it was bad when the doctor said she wanted me to take antibiotics for twice as long and come back to get it checked out after that. According to Google and e-Medical Online, ear infection can be caused by a lot of things such as a cold that has spread to the ear or swimmers' ear. They also say that rest, liquids and avoiding scuba diving is key to recovery- so, here I am on Friday night in my pjs hanging out with my pets and blogging about ear infections.

Being a crazy animal lady-

So, yes, I am a crazy animal lady. I like animals. I like talking to them - mostly because they can't talk back; they can only make annoying sounds. For example, my guinea pig, Paulikins, who can only make loud 'meeping' squeals when he wants something or when he's on the floor and has followed you into the kitchen for a snack.  I also happen to have two birds, a fish, a frog and another type of fish thing that cleans the tank. I know my landlord loves me and my neighbours love it even more.  Now you must think all I do is hang out with my animals all day and be a hermit - and you're pretty much right.  Somehow, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. People nowadays just aren't what they use to be.  What can I  say? I like the everlasting and unquestioning love and devotion animals give. I always cry when I read that PETA is having to defend animals or the ASPCA advertises dogs or cats looking for a home. Those big, sad eyes just look straight at me and I want to hug them.

Celebrity News 24 hours a day 7 days a week

North American culture is obsessed with the lifestyles of the "Rich and Famous", so obsessed that there are websites, talk shows, and even full hour TV shows dedicated to these handful of people.   One of the most common websites that can be found for up to minute news on celebrities is TMZ.

TMZ debuted in November of 2005. Its letters stand for thirty-mile zone which implies the zone of West Beverly Boulevard and North La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles.  TMZ uses the paparazzi for most of its footage as well as its pictures of celebrities on its site. TMZ also has a TV show that actually takes place in the TMZ office. The show has the employees of TMZ “investigating” things going on in the entertainment world. TMZ is known for breaking the story of Mel Gibson’s arrest for a DUI. Also they were the first website to know about Britney Spears’ divorce to Kevin Federline as well as they had reported on Michael Jackson’s death before any other news station. On the website for TMZ anyone take part in helping them with news. “Got a Tip?” is on every page and anyone can type in their type for TMZ reporters or they can call the TMZ hotline. The site as well as the TV show is catered to young minds. The show is really simple to follow and does not stay on a topic very long. The website is easy to navigate and all of the entries are short and to the point.

Another huge part of the entertainment news scene is Perez Hilton. This website is actually a person whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. Perez Hilton is a blogger and his website divers from the website of TMZ. Since his website is a blog it is his opinion so even though there is up to date celebrity news on his website and there is some actual reporting taking place it is written with bias. Perez does have an easy site to navigate. There is even an option on the toolbar that is called “Star seeker”.  This allows to you to find almost every celebrity that is famous of some sort and find articles on the Perez Hilton website written about them. Fun right!?! Oh to feel like we are a part of the world of celebrities.

Even while waiting in line at the grocery store people can take full advantage of reading into the lives of people they wish to be and who they have never met. People Magazine one of the more reputable magazines always has a cover story in which they interview a celebrity or someone who is famous at that time and get all the information they can. This week in People the cover story is about Matthew McConaughey’s wedding to Camilla Alves and what the story is behind her wedding dress. One of my favourite issues of People are usually the "Sexiest Man Alive" issues or the "Hottest Bachelors". Yummy!

The cover on MacLean’s Magazine is “The Majority of us are singles. So why do we still live in a couples world?” but that’s real news so it’s not as exciting.

I love People Magazine don’t get me wrong. I probably knew more about Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitts divorce then I knew about the bombing in London by Islamic Terrorists that killed over 50 people. That is what society has become though. People care more about who is dating who, rather than what is going on in the world. It is interesting our fascination with the lives of people who are famous. We are a society who cares more about what Angelina Jolie is wearing to the Oscars rather than the problems of child hunger across the world.

Calgary Stampede Centennial

In 1884 Calgary was incorporated as a town, and in 1912 Calgary hosted the very first Calgary Stampede, then named the Frontier Days and Cowboy Championship Contest. Since then the
Calgary Stampede has grown into something much bigger and brighter, something that consumes Calgary every July and makes our city come alive.

Whether you enjoy the Calgary Stampede or not, we should all agree that for those two weeks in July there is always something fun happening around our city. Whether it's the Stampede Parade, pancake breakfasts at midnight (look at FlapJack Finder to find pancake breakfasts), or Stampede parties of every kind. These things, no matter how silly they might be, bring the Calgarian community together.

With so many possibilities there really is something for everyone, here are a few things going on during the Calgary Stampede:
Photo Credit: are you gonna eat that
  • If you love rides and games you can spend a night at the Midway.
  • If you are interested in animals or agriculture you can take a look at the Exhibition
  • If you want to shop and buy knick knacks then you can walk through the Roundup Centre Market.
  • If you're into music then you can watch nightly performances on the Coca Cola Stage, or grab tickets to the Grand Stand Show.
  • If you like eating then you can experience snacks like mini donuts, blooming onions, and chips on a stick.
  • If you really want to experience something Western and see some real cowboys, you can attend the Rodeo or the Rangeland Derby
  • Or better yet, if you want to party like a cowboy you can go to Nashville North or the Cowboys tent.

Now this list doesn't include all the events happening outside of the Stampede grounds, but believe me there are lots more!

If you're a Calgary Stampede critic, which I'm sure many of you are, I'm going to urge you to lighten up a bit! Go out, dress up like a cowboy, and appreciate the experience for what it is: 100 year old fun!

Movie Review: Waking Ned Divine

I recently watched the film Waking Ned Divine (called Waking Ned outside of North America). This is a film from 1998, so I automatically knew I would love it (I can't get enough of 90's movies!), and I did.

Waking Ned Divine was written and directed by Kirk Jones, who won a BAFTA award in 1999 for "best newcomer" as the director of this film. Jones has more recently directed Nanny McPhee (2005), Everybody's Fine (2009), and What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012). All of which pale in comparison to his film debut, Waking Ned Divine.

Waking Ned Divine is a story set in a small Irish town of 52 people called Tully More. The storyline is as follows:
  • The main characters Jackie O'Shea (Ian Bannen), Michael O'Sullivan (David Kelly), and Annie O'Shea (Fionnula Flanagan) discover that someone in the town of Tully More has won the lottery, and attempt to find out who it is.
  • They decide to throw a chicken-dinner party and invite all the regular lottery players in an attempt to narrow down their search.
  • One guest, Ned Divine, does not attend the party, and after the party Jackie O'Shea finds him dead in his bed holding the winning ticket.
  • With the discovery of Ned Divine's body and the lottery ticket Jackie O'Shea and Michael O'Sullivan decide that Ned wants them to claim the ticket and share the winnings among the townsfolk.
  • Chaos ensues when the lottery commission sends someone to check on Ned and process the winning ticket.
This film elicits a portion of each emotion as you watch it. It is branded as a comedy, but it provided me with the emotion of a drama and the stress of a thriller, all while being truly heartwarming and comedic.

Best Friends: Michael O'Sullivan (left) and Jackie O'Shea (right)

The two main characters Jackie O'Shea and Michael O'Sullivan are elderly best friends, who at times still act like children, making their friendship so believable it will make your heart swell. While the other townsfolk all have very vivid personalities which adds to the entertainment value of the film. The beautiful scenery of the Irish country side and quaint little town also adds to the story of Waking Ned Divine.

If you love uplifting films I would recommend Waking Ned Divine. This movie will make you feel happy, sad, and nervous at different points throughout the story, and leave you feeling happier than you did before you watched it!

I would give this film 8.5 out of 10!

Calgary Folk Music Festival, July 26-29

The Calgary Folk Music Festival happens every July at Prince's Island Park since 1980. This festival not only includes folk artists, but also a wide variety of other artists. This is a festival where there is something for everyone.

Each day of the festival includes a main stage act in the evening, where the main headliners perform. This year Chris Issak, Beirut, and Iron & Wine are all playing the main stage, along with many other global artists. Throughout the day there are six smaller stages where multiple artists will perform alone, or together in workshops. The workshops are always interesting and often exciting to listen to since they provide something new and different each time, and are never repeated again.

In addition to the music there is always amazing food vendors and interesting shops set up along the side of the park. Not to mention the Big Rock beer gardens, which are always full rain or shine.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival has also taken a green initiative. Everything brought to Prince's Island is either recyclable, reusable, or compostable. No bottled water is sold during the festival, food is served on reusable plates, all plastic is recycled, and all the cutlery is compostable. All of these things help reduce the carbon footprint of the yearly festival, something that no one can complain about!

This festival has a very strong community feel. Everyone who is into the Folk Fest takes part in a daily tarp run in an attempt to get as close to the stage as possible. My neighbourhood meets each year to set up a schedule to determine who will be sleeping over each night and waiting in line in order to ensure a spot at the front of the main stage. It sounds a little crazy, but it's worth it!

This is one of the most eclectic and cultural events that Calgary has to offer, and I would recommend it to everyone. No matter what type of music you're into you'll have fun at this festival! You can get day passes or passes for the entire weekend in order to accommodate your prerogatives, and student passes are less expensive!

Does anyone else attend the Calgary Folk Music Festival? How have your experiences been?

Album Review: Blunderbuss

Blunderbuss [bluhn-der-buhs] – to be flawed or clumsy.

Jack White’s debut solo album, titled Blunderbuss, is the exact opposite of the dictionary definition. In my opinion, this 13 track CD more closely mirrors perfection and pure skill.

The album is packed with blues, hard rock, heart-pouring piano solos, roots and even some country influences; all of which are perfectly married with Jack’s unique vocals and raw, emotional, passion filled lyrics.

We’ve seen a variety of Jack White, with different sounds and styles in TheWhite Stripes, The Raconteurs and Dead Weather. But this album, gives Jack White fans a true taste of exactly what Jack White is about.

I kinda love him...
Love Interruption (track 4) was the first single released from the album, maybe you’ve heard it – it’s the reason I bought the album. Although like most albums these days, I assumed the single would be the strongest track on the album, but man was I wrong. I popped the CD into my car and was blown away by the opening track Missing Pieces, and then from there the album seemed to just get better and better. Tracks like Blunderbuss and I Guess I Should Go to Sleep give us a taste of Jack White we’ve never seen before in his other work. While I admit, the style of these two tracks isn’t exactly the Jack White I love; they are a glimpse into Jack’s true inspiration and unique talent and definitley worth a listen.

The hard, heartbroken tracks such as Freedom at 21, Hypocritical Kiss and Weep Themselves to Sleep, are what seal the deal for me. The passion, talent and raw emotion in these songs have made me fall in love with Jack White.

Definitely give Love Interruption and Sixteen Saltines a listen. I am pretty confident you will fall in love with Jack White too.

My overall rating: 4.5/5

Ok seriously, what the hell reality TV?

Reality TV shows are a guilty pleasure of mine. A Say Yes to Dress Marathon on a Friday night will probably result in me staying home and watching rather than going out, Chopped is a perfect way to ignore my homework for another hour, and while I hate everything about The Bachelor, I am usually glued to the TV screen.

But I've recently seen some reality TV show previews that have left me a little confused. Seriously what the hell reality TV, you are getting a little bit carried away, I mean not EVERYTHING should be turned into a reality show:
  1. On the FlyAirline employees must think on their feet as they cope with weather delays, irate passengers, and more surprising situations - a TV show about airports?! What? I get that part of the appeal to reality TV is the audiences ability to relate to the show, but who wants to relive the airport experience if they don't have a vacation on the other side?
  2. Hillbilly Hand fishing, Join hosts Skipper Bivins and Trent Jackson as they teach everyday folks how to catch massive catfish with their hands and feet! - Oh perfect! I've always wished I could catch a fish with my feet...
  3.  Barter Kings, When it comes to bartering, anything can happen, and these guys can't get enough! - my sister has tried to convince me that this show is amazing... But I'm sorry, a show that resembles a garage sale does NOT sound like a good time to me...
  4. Craft Wars, Get your glue guns ready! Hosted by Tori Spelling - don't you have like 4 kids and 4 other TV shows on the go Tori Spelling?
I should mention, I haven't actually seen any of these shows (other than the previews) but I some how don't think I'm missing very much... Has anyone else seen any of these crazy shows? Or are there other ridiculous additions that should be added to my list?

Nerd Alert

Question: What’s “cool” now?

Answer: Everything that was not cool a decade ago.

Okay, I’m joking, sort of. But seriously, like since when is it cool to be nerdy? Like all of a sudden everyone’s saying “no but seriously I am such a nerd” or “I am such a geek”.

I have given myself the right to critique this behavior because I spent my whole life as a geek, disguising myself as a “cool kid”. Seriously, in elementary school I chose a different animal on a weekly basis for an independent research project. I read The Big Book of Knowledge for fun.

If that doesn’t scream nerd alert I don’t know what will. As a kid, these were the things I hid from my friends and for a good reason, had they known how “uncool” I really was I would have been ostracized, abandoned, a complete loner!

Now that I am an adult, it seems like everyone is bragging about his or her nerdy-ness. People all around me are sporting thick-rimmed glasses and trying to outdo one another in how alternative and intellectual they all are. What is this about? What is going on? Why is everyone trying to out nerd and out geek one another?

Anyways, the irony here is that I spent my life hiding my nerd side to avoid being ostracized by my peers, and now it seems that if I were not a nerd I would be running the same risk. Maybe everyone was secretly a closet nerd a kid, and now we are free to express ourselves? Or maybe being nerdy is simply a passing trend and all these newly self-proclaimed “geeks” are still just trying to fit in and form their own identities? I guess we’ll find out soon enough

Calgary's Best 2012

If you’re stuck in Calgary this summer and not sure what to do, Fast Forward weekly published their Best of Calgary 2012 today and could provide you with a bunch of new places to check out.

Along with Calgary’s top places to check out, they’ve also posted things like the best neighborhood, scariest sidewalk, and best uses for tax dollars.

I was not surprised to find that the new Peace Bridge was voted the worst use of tax dollars along with the new roads and public transit. I find the new bridge to be a useless eye sore.

As for what to do while you’re stuck in Calgary, how about checking out a free event? The Sun and Salsa Festival was voted second best free event following the Lilac Festival

You can head down to Kensington on July 22 and test out a bunch of different salsas from different vendors. While you’re snacking away, you can listen to live Latin music that will be playing throughout the streets.

If you’re a bookworm, how about checking out a new bookstore? Fair’s FairPages on Kensington, and Shelf Life Books were voted the best bookstores in Calgary. You could spend a whole afternoon just browsing through the books and you can check out their websites for any upcoming events in their store.

Photo: Saaremaa 2003
If you decide it’s too sunny to be stuck inside a bookstore all day, you can never go wrong with grabbing some ice cream. Fiasco GelatoAmato Gelato CafĂ©, and My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe were voted the best ice cream shops. While Fiasco and Amato seem more like a more fancy choice, My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe is a more classic style of ice cream with a bunch of different flavors to choose from.

Photo: Ocean City
If you’re more of a night owl, how about checking out the best voted night life? While most people are probably familiar with the clubs voted best place to dance like CommonwealthHifi, and Twisted, some places that might be new to you are those voted the “Coolest hole-in-the-wall” like Milk Tiger Lounge,  Hop in Brew Pub, and Broken City

There’s still a whole range of Calgary’s best posted on this list, so I definitely suggest you check it out. Do you agree with everything that they voted on the list as Calgary’s best? I’d be interested to hear some people’s input.

#TwitterWorthy

I haven’t been a Twitter user for a very long time. I only started using Twitter when I got my very first iPhone 4s (I felt that with an iPhone, came great responsibilities haha). Despite the short time that I have been on Twitter, I’ve noticed one very common thing... People don’t “tweet” for their own sake... they tweet for others.

I personally use twitter for my own amusement. I use it as a place to do short little vents,  or to talk about things that I KNOW for a fact, that no one will care about. I find it reassuring to be able to say what I want, when I want without having to be under the public (ie. my friends) scrutiny, as I would be on Facebook. I don’t advertise my Twitter account on Facebook, nor do I ever mention that I have one... Ever. It’s okay for strangers to find me and follow me, but I don’t want people I personally know to follow me. For me Twitter is a private thing.

Now, back to what I was saying earlier. The friends that I have who have their Twitter accounts linked with their Facebook, they post things that are clearly specified to be what I call a “#TwitterWorthy” post. As in they would post things that relate to the current trending hashtags (#). It's almost like they are trying to gain some sort of recognition. It's like high school, they're trying to be in the popular crowd. It isn’t just me who has noticed this, a really good friend of mine pointed this out. After that I noticed it EVERYWHERE.

I’m not saying that I am perfect... As of lately, I too have been finding myself trying to make Twitter worthy posts. It isn’t like i set out trying to do this, but sometimes when a super awesome amazing thing happens to me, I think to myself, ‘oh hey! This is totally going to go on Twitter!! Then I slowly start to formulate a hashtag for it. Now hashtags have to conclude what you just said, but in a condensed (two maybe three word) and witty way. It could range from, "So I just saw my dog do the funniest thing in the back yard!! #DogPoop" to "Most beautiful ceremony I've ever watched! #RoyalWedding"

I hate it. I absolutely hate it. I want Twitter to be a thing for myself, but the affect that Twitter has on people is crazy, I think it is an inevitable thing. We are going to get swept up the whirlwind of what is popular. No matter how much we say that we won’t succumb to the temptations of pop culture, we will.

Ask yourself this, have you ever unintentionally planned something around a Tweet, a Facebook status update or an Instagram tag?
